Baby Downtime continued time should happen naturally, from 5 to 15 minutes, several times through the day. When you place her in a bouncy seat, and she is happily bouncing, let her be. You don't need to constantly engage her in active play, with toys or games. Learn the child's signals. Newborns will often turn their eyes from you, arch their back, or cry. Others become over stimulated. And still others will just flop down on the floor or put their heads down. One way to avoid overload is to make sure their environment is not too cluttered. Too many toys lying around may make baby frustrated, because of too many choices. Teaching children how to enjoy the benefits of doing nothing may remind YOU of the most important lesson of all: to slow down and savor your time also! (excerpt from Parenting Magazine.) |
