August has arrived and while there’s still plenty of time to soak up the summer sun, upcoming September is on everyone’s mind. Back to school, the jump start of fall sports and activities, and routine changes are just some of the things that need attention. Here are a few tips to help to get back in Fall mode:

Prepare the calendar. Print out a calendar or set up a dry-erase board on the refrigerator to note when school starts, days off, sport/activity schedules, and back to school meetings. If kept up to date, this ensures that all family members and caregivers are informed of the daily activities.

Make a list. With hectic work schedules, parents may ask you to make a list of necessities. This might include school supplies, uniforms, doctor, dentist, and vision checkups, and finalizing all summer projects and book reports.

Start the countdown. Make kids aware that back to school is coming and they should start preparing for early mornings, early to bed evenings, meeting new teachers and friends, and how they will adjust to a new school year.

Review routine. Have kids develop goals for the school year and develop daily routines that will ensure a smooth transition from the moment they wake up, to the time they go bed. For school-aged kids, this is a good time to establish a homework and study schedule that works with activities and family time.

Enjoy the summer. There are still a few more weeks before back to school jitters set in so enjoy this time. Visit the local playground, zoo, aquarium, and story times because in just a few short weeks, students and parents everywhere will begin the 9-month countdown to summer 2017!
